During my childhood I spent countless hours in the forest behind my house, exploring and observing, always feeling a rush of exuberance when I got a close up encounter with one of the forest creatures. I was at home in the natural world. My first recollection of something being amiss was when the forest was cut down and bulldozed flat for a new subdivision going in. I had seen new houses go up before in my neighborhood, but the land was disturbed only to the extent necessary and many majestic trees were still left standing. This time the forest was gone, and every critter, tree, plant and bug in it. The beginning of a great void. As I got older I developed an interest in science, technology and design and although I found these endeavors stimulating, I couldn't help but think that they were merely man's primitive attempt to describe, disassemble, and reconstruct the natural world. My first job, when I was 16, was working for the Ministry of Natural Resources as a Junior Conservationist. It was a glorious summer exploring and designing nature trails in the Rockway Conservation Area on the Niagara escarpment. I went on to study engineering and ultimately became an accomplished designer as a means to satisfy my predisposition to create. Advance to circa 2015, the void is still here and modern man's obtrusive arrogance is in sharp contrast to his still primitive view of the world around him. My goal, while I am still here, is to open up people's minds to what is possible, so that our children and their grandchildren will someday, fill the great void with an enlightened understanding of the wonders of the natural world around them and grow to become great stewards of our earth.
