Soil and Ecosystem
Soil is the glue that holds our ecosystem together |
Soil and soil management are critical to the balance of the ecosystem. Soils absorb and store excess rainfall, provide nutrients to the trees and shrubs that stabilize slopes and keep erosion in check and, in turn, moderate runoff and minimize spikes in nutrient loading in our lakes and rivers. When left alone, soil naturally builds with the help of fallen trees, branches, leaf litter, fungus, earth worms, insects, and bacteria. This is the natural process that turns death and decay into nutrients that feed new life, in a never ending cyclical process of perpetual balance. The apogee of this state of balance is found in the old growth forests that sequester vast amounts of carbon, process millions of tons of carbon dioxide daily, and act as a tremendous buffer to our ecosystem. In terms of biomass, the concept of removing an old growth tree and replacing it with a sapling, while maintaining that we have done our part to support ecology, is simply preposterous.
