Soil and Ecosystem

Soil is the glue that holds our ecosystem together

Picture
Soil and soil management are critical to the balance of the ecosystem.  Soils absorb and store excess rainfall, provide nutrients to the trees and shrubs that stabilize slopes and keep erosion in check and, in turn, moderate runoff and minimize spikes in nutrient loading in our lakes and rivers.  When left alone, soil naturally builds with the help of fallen trees, branches, leaf litter, fungus, earth worms, insects, and bacteria.  This is the natural process that turns death and decay into nutrients that feed new life, in a never ending cyclical process of perpetual balance.  The apogee of this state of balance is found in the old growth forests that sequester vast amounts of carbon, process millions of tons of carbon dioxide daily, and act as a tremendous buffer to our ecosystem.   In terms of biomass, the concept of removing an old growth tree and replacing it with a sapling, while maintaining that we have done our part to support ecology, is simply preposterous.
Misguided human activity has put many parts of the world ecology in a state of imbalance.  From minor activities like over grazing, high density meat production, paved roads, and lawns, to major activities involving oil and mineral extraction, burning fossil fuels, cutting down vast amounts of rainforest to clear the land for more meat production, and monoculture farming methods using pesticides and herbicides, we are witnessing unprecedented  climate change, pollution, soil depletion, and loss of our pollinators, habitat and wildlife.  These escalating issues have some scientists questioning if we are in the midst of an extinction event.  Perhaps our eradication is nature's way of addressing this imbalance.
With some relatively minor tweaking to our tradition and culture, we could easily turn this ship around.  We have the knowledge and capacity to address of the issues of the world today.  While the status quo languishes, we could effect a system of accolade for those who choose to support the natural life systems on the planet.  From a focus on decentralized local economy, local organic food production, renewable energy systems, earth sheltered tiny homes, human powered and electric transportation systems, and a mindset shift from scarcity to abundance, the world could become a healthier, happier, and  sustainable place to work, play and thrive.
